“Used to” is the key phrase here. What do you do today if you wanna go to some place and just have casual sex there with like-minded lesbians? I'm sure many people have already said this, but somewhere way down on the list of reprehensible things about the Florida slavery revisionism is the fact that it turns the truth directly on its head: African slaves were imported to the Americas, in many cases, specifically for their expertise. Entire industries (like rice farming!) that still exist today were only possible because colonisers, lacking the necessary knowledge to productively exploit certain land and resources they had stolen, purchased that knowledge in the form of adult Africans; or in other cases because slaves were assigned a task that their owners had reason to believe was impossible and invented new processes and technologies to do it.
And Ron DeSantis's fucking Ministry of Truth over here (small government though lol) is literally spinning this around 180 degrees and saying actually Black people got those skills from white people and ought to be thankful for it. It's heinous. It's the next closest thing to saying Black people were not people until the beneficent masters chose to uplift them and make them that way - like children, a tabula rasa, a state of nature, no history, no culture, no nothing. Like they weren't really doing anything over in Africa so it's just as well they were brought here where they could make something of themselves, learn a trade and so on. Evil evil evil.
